At the time there wasn't a precedent in America for dolls for young girls that undoubtedly looked like adult women. The idea was originally greeted with a good deal of skepticism, but Ruth recognized that this was a potential untapped market, and she ultimately persevered. Due to her passion, Mattel became the first firm to successfully capitalize on an adult outline doll marketed specifically towards an audience of young girls looking to play pretend as an adult role model.

The marketing of Barbie brought about someone else world first for Mattel. This was the first time in which a toy had been extensively marketed over the untested media of television. It was a huge success, and the example has since been extensively copied throughout the decades by toy manufacturers looking to gain an audience for their new products.
